Dr. Yasir Saleem was a history major in college but that all changed when he took an emergency medical technician (EMT) course. “I thought it would be a good way to explore the medical field,” he explains. “So that’s what helped steer me into medicine. I initially thought I was going to practice in mental health but later settled on Family Medicine as a career.”
At Reliant Dr. Saleem says that he finds each day in Family Medicine different. “I like working in primary care because there is no set limit on what you can do and every day is unique,” he explains. “One day you might be doing a joint injection, the next day might be helping someone with psychiatric problem. In many ways, the opportunities to help patients are almost limitless. Even if I recommend my patient see a specialist, it’s still my job at the end of the day to make sure that that patient is getting the proper care they need. So being on that journey with them is really fulfilling.”
Dr. Saleem is encouraged by all the new technologies that are benefitting patients now. “There is a lot of great technology out there, and it is getting better all the time. For instance, there are small ultrasound devices that you can connect to your phone to view images. An Apple watch can accurately monitor heart health. We also have wearable devices for diabetic patients that can monitor their blood sugar instantly. So, technology is becoming easier to use and more helpful for doctors and patients alike.”
In his practice at Reliant, Dr. Saleem knows he has a great staff behind him that helps both doctors and patients. “Our staff can guide and coordinate patients through just about everything from scheduling colonoscopy screenings to making sure patients are getting and taking their medications,” he explains. “People can also get an answer to a problem quicker because a staff member can answer it instead of a doctor. In our office, you can go in and see your doctor, go to the lab, get an X-ray, get your prescription filled and even get your eyes examined. It’s just very convenient for patients.”
When he is not busy with his patients Dr. Saleem enjoys spending time with his wife and family. Some of his hobbies include Civil War reenacting and table-top gaming. He also enjoys traveling with his family.
