This study is comparing two gout medications and long-term effects of the medications.

Looking for patients with active gout (elevated uric acid in blood or presence of gout tophi)

  • Patients must have at least one cardiovascular risk factor (previous heart attack, angina, coronary artery bypass surgery or stent, stroke, diabetes or peripheral vascular disease)
  • Patients receive either allopurinol or febuxostat for up to five years
  • Patients receive study medications at no charge
  • Study-required doctor visits, lab work and EKGs are provided at no charge.
  • Patients receive $30 per visit to cover incidental costs.
