Mohs micrographic surgery is an advanced treatment procedure that removes skin lesions one layer at a time for immediate examination under a microscope. The procedure allows for a close, thorough examination of each skin layer to detect cancer cells and offers patients the highest chance for recovery.
By utilizing such an exact and precise method of tumor removal, Mohs micrographic surgery minimizes the chance for regrowth and limits the size of the surgical scar. The color-coded mapping of excised lesions and a thorough microscopic examination allows the physician to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor, while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.
Mohs surgery is most commonly used for treating two of the most common forms of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It can also be used to treat melanoma. Studies have shown that Mohs Micrographic Surgery has a five-year cure rate of up to 99 percent in the treatment of new basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.
After the cancer is removed, the small wound left after surgery may be allowed to heal on its own, or the wound may be closed with stiches, a skin graft or a flap. The surgeon will often perform the reconstructive procedures himself, or it can be done later by another doctor.
