Vanessa, who received her Master’s degree in Nursing from Regis College in 2022, practices in Reliant’s Geriatrics Primary Care program, which conveniently provides care for elderly patients inside their own home.

“Nursing is a holistic profession. Nurses build trust and rapport with patients,” she explains. “Being an advanced practitioner allows me to deliver individualized care, where medical interventions are guided by the patient’s particular needs, choices, and lifestyle.”

Vanessa has always had a big interest in caring for geriatric patients. “Geriatric patients have been 99% of the patient population I have ever cared for, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she explains. “What I like the most about practicing in Geriatric Primary Care is that is combines my two passions – geriatrics and home health.”

In her work Vanessa believes in empowering her patients so they can make the right decisions regarding their health. “I think empowering patients to be the decision makers of their health preserves their independence and dignity,” she explains. “I like to help patients identify their support systems and encourage discussions about their wishes. Whether it is during a well visit, an acute illness, managing a chronic illness or end of life care, every patient has a voice that should be heard.”

What Vanessa loves the most about her profession is the feeling of honor and gratitude that comes from caring for others. “I wholeheartedly enjoy caring for geriatric patients, especially in the home care setting. The level of individualized care that can be provided in the home setting is extraordinary.”

In her spare time Vanessa enjoys being with her family including her four children, a cat, and a dog. She also enjoys 30-day challenges, self-help books, volunteering, latch and hook projects, watching Netflix, and making Brazilian desserts.
