Thinking of Choosing a Midwife?

By Lynne Masterson, CNM
Reliant Obstetrics and Gynecology Dept.

Many women first consider a midwife’s services when they find out they are pregnant. Others look for a midwife to assist them with their gynecological care. In either case, Reliant Medical Group’s team of midwives are here to help.

Most women have heard about midwives, but not everyone understands all that their role encompasses. Midwifery care varies from state to state, depending on certification and licensing. All of the midwives at Reliant Medical Group are licensed Advanced Practice Nurses who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, and women’s health. Our Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) care for women who are in good overall health. If you have a medical or an obstetrical complication, your Certified Nurse Midwife will refer you to an Obstetrician or co-manage your care. Reliant CNMs work collaboratively within the same department as Reliant’s OB-Gyn physicians and attend deliveries at The Center for Women and Infants at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

One of the main reasons why some women choose a midwife is because they desire a different approach to pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives pride themselves on being highly nurturing, hands-on professionals before, during, and after birth. They strive to develop a trusting relationship with each patient and support them through all phases of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

In addition to supporting women during childbirth, midwives also offer other routine services for women including annual gynecological exams, pap smears, preconceptual counseling, prenatal care, contraception, and menopausal management. Midwives are a great source of knowledge and will teach you about fertility, contraceptive options, nutrition, and breastfeeding.

According to the American College of Nurse Midwives some of the benefits of midwifery care include:

  • Decreased risk of cesarean section delivery
  • Reduced rates of labor induction and augmentation
  • Reduced use of regional anesthesia
  • Increased chances of having a positive start to breastfeeding

The goal of all the Certified Nurse Midwives at Reliant Medical Group is to support women and their families in the process of pregnancy and help them welcome their baby in a safe environment with attentive, personalized care while minimizing unnecessary interventions. Did you know that 80% of the people alive in the world today were born with a midwife?

If you choose a Certified Nurse Midwife for your pregnancy care, you can rest assured that one will be by your side when you have your baby. At Reliant, our CNMs offer on call services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. In the rare event that a serious issue develops when you are giving birth, an Obstetrician is always available to provide care. Reliant Certified Nurse Midwives practice at many convenient locations including in our offices at Worcester Medical Center, Westborough, Leominster, Milford, Holden, and Webster. We are the only practice in central Massachusetts which offers 24/7 midwifery coverage. If you are thinking about receiving care from a midwife, there’s no better place than Reliant.
